What boosterpacks can you use the Holodetector on?
TL;dr:
Holodetectable packs that contain either a holo or non-holo rare include Wizards of the Coast era sets (1999-2003), E-Reader series (2002-2003), EX series (2003-2007), Diamond & Pearl series (2007-2009), Platinum series (2009-2010), and HeartGold & SoulSilver series (2010-2011).
Modern packs from Black & White onward are not weighable due to code cards, guaranteed holo slots, and changes in pack structure.
Pokemon Booster Packs That Contain Either a Holo or Non-Holo Rare and are therefor suitable for use with the Holodetector:
These are packs where the rare card is either a standard non-holo or a holo, with no guarantee of a holo in every pack. These sets are generally perfect for the HoloDetector because holo cards in addittion to the holographic foil of the pack are what the HoloDetector picks up and alerts on.
In the Wizards of the Coast era (1999-2003), most sets followed a 1-in-3 holo ratio, meaning a booster pack would either contain a holo or a non-holo rare. This includes Base Set (1st Edition, Shadowless, Unlimited), Jungle, Fossil, Team Rocket, Gym Heroes, Gym Challenge, Neo Genesis, Neo Discovery, Neo Revelation, and Neo Destiny.
The E-Reader series (2002-2003), which includes Expedition Base Set, Aquapolis, and Skyridge, follows the same pattern, with each pack containing one rare card that could either be a holo or non-holo.
In the EX Series (2003-2007), most packs contained either a non-holo rare or a holo rare, making them holodetectable. However, starting from EX Sandstorm, every pack included a reverse holo slot, making detection more difficult but still possible for determining whether the rare was a holo or not. Holodetectable sets from this era include EX Ruby & Sapphire, EX Sandstorm, EX Dragon, EX Team Magma vs. Team Aqua, EX Hidden Legends, EX FireRed & LeafGreen, EX Team Rocket Returns, EX Deoxys, EX Emerald, EX Unseen Forces, EX Delta Species, EX Legend Maker, EX Holon Phantoms, EX Crystal Guardians, EX Dragon Frontiers, and EX Power Keepers.
The Diamond & Pearl series (2007-2009) continued the pattern of either a non-holo or a holo rare in each pack. However, reverse holos in every pack made detecting slightly harder. These sets include Diamond & Pearl Base Set, Mysterious Treasures, Secret Wonders, Great Encounters, Majestic Dawn, Legends Awakened, and Stormfront.
The Platinum series (2009-2010) followed the same format, with holodetectable packs containing either a non-holo or a holo rare. This includes Platinum, Rising Rivals, Supreme Victors, and Arceus.
The HeartGold & SoulSilver series (2010-2011) was the last era where packs contained either a non-holo or a holo rare, making them holodetectable. This includes HeartGold & SoulSilver, Unleashed, Undaunted, and Triumphant.
What Changed After This?
Starting in the Black & White era (2011): Pokemon introduced codecards to prevent holodetectables working. However: when the packs either contain a holographic card or not it can still work.
From Sun & Moon (2017) onward, every pack contained at least a reverse holo, and starting with Sword & Shield (2020), every pack included at least a holo rare, further eliminating the use of the Holodetector. In Scarlet & Violet (2023), non-holo rares were removed entirely, meaning every pack contains at least a holo. Using the HoloDetector on these packs is not possible but it defeats its purpose because it would always alert.
Also note that a lot of the Japanese packs van be used with the Holodetector. As long as it is containing either a holographic card or a non-holographic card the Holodetector will work. Updates with information on which packs will follow soon.
About us
Holodetector was invented after a small group of Dutch Pokemon collectors got together in january of 2024. Frustrated about how more and more and more vintage boosterpacks have been tampered with and all their money being wasted on dud packs they figured there was only one thing to do: create a device that can detect a holographic card without ripping the pack. After a year of designing, engineering and testing their dream was now alive: the HOLODETECTOR was born. A 100% guaranteed way to stop throwing away their money! As more of their friend's noticed their "pullrates" they decided to share their dream om tiktok and quickly it became a viral hit. Now handcrafting and selling their smart device full time.
